Hello, and thank you for taking the time to talk today. Starting or continuing chemotherapy can bring a mix of emotions ? uncertainty, worry, hope, and sometimes fear. All of those feelings are completely normal. My role as your pharmacist is to walk with you through this process, help you understand your medication, and make sure you feel supported and cared for every step of the way.
Platinol-AQ, also known by its generic name cisplatin, is a chemotherapy medication that has been used for many years to treat many different types of cancer, including bladder, testicular, ovarian, lung, and others. It is a powerful but well-studied medication that has played an important role in successful cancer treatment for countless patients.
Cisplatin works by entering cancer cells and disrupting their DNA. When cancer cells cannot properly repair or copy their DNA, they can no longer grow or divide, and eventually they die. This helps slow the cancer?s growth, shrink tumors, and improve outcomes. Although cisplatin is strong, your treatment team uses it carefully and thoughtfully to give you the greatest possible benefit.
You?ll receive Platinol-AQ through an IV infusion, usually in a clinic or hospital setting. The infusion is given slowly, and you will be closely monitored by experienced nurses. Because cisplatin can affect the kidneys, one of the most important parts of treatment is receiving plenty of IV fluids before and after the infusion. This helps protect your kidneys and allows your body to process the medication safely. It also means that treatment days may be longer, but each step is designed to keep you safe.
As with all chemotherapy, cisplatin can cause side effects. Not everyone experiences the same effects, and many people tolerate it better than they expect. Here are the most common things you may notice:
Nausea is one of the more frequent side effects with cisplatin. For some people, it can be strong without proper prevention. This is why you will receive several anti-nausea medications before your infusion and prescriptions to take afterward at home. These medications have improved a lot over the years, and many people do very well with them. If you ever feel your nausea is not being controlled, please tell us so we can adjust your medications.
Fatigue is also very common. Chemotherapy affects the entire body, and it is normal to feel more tired than usual, especially in the days after your treatment. This fatigue may feel different from normal tiredness ? deeper or more persistent. It is important to rest when you need to and give your body time to recover.
Cisplatin can affect the kidneys, which is why hydration is so important. You will receive extra fluids during treatment, and you will be encouraged to drink well at home unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Your kidney function will be checked regularly with blood tests. If anything changes, your doctors can adjust your treatment to keep you safe.
Changes in hearing can occur with cisplatin. Some people notice a ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or difficulty hearing high-pitched sounds. This does not happen to everyone, but it is important to tell your care team right away if you notice any hearing changes. Early communication helps us respond quickly and protect your long-term hearing.
Cisplatin can also lower your blood counts by affecting the bone marrow. This can increase your risk of infection, cause fatigue from low red blood cells, or make you bruise more easily if your platelets drop. You will have regular blood tests so your care team can monitor these levels closely. If your counts go too low, we can adjust your treatment, delay a dose, or use supportive medications.
Another possible effect is neuropathy, which is tingling, numbness, or a pins-and-needles feeling in your fingers or toes. This can start gradually and may increase with more doses. If you feel any new numbness or tingling, please tell us quickly. Early monitoring helps us protect your nerves.
Taste changes, temporary appetite loss, or mild electrolyte imbalances can also occur. These are manageable, and we can support you with supplements, diet tips, or medications if needed.
Although this list may feel long, please remember that you are not expected to manage any of this alone. You will be closely monitored, supported, and cared for throughout your treatment. Many people receiving cisplatin continue their normal daily activities with adjustments, rest, and good communication with their care team.
There are things you can do to help yourself during this time. Staying hydrated is very important. Eating small, gentle meals may help if your appetite changes. Rest when your body needs rest. Avoid people who are sick, since your immune system may be lowered. And most importantly, tell your team if anything feels different, uncomfortable, or concerning. You do not need to decide whether a symptom matters ? if it matters to you, it matters to us.
Above all, please know that you are not facing this situation alone. Your doctors, nurses, and I as your pharmacist are here to guide you, support you, and answer any questions you have. No concern is too small. Your comfort and safety are our priority.
You are going through something challenging with strength and courage, even if you don?t always feel that way. Please reach out anytime you need reassurance, information, or support. I am here with you throughout your treatment journey.
