Hexaxim is a combination vaccine used to protect infants and young children against six serious infectious diseases. These diseases are diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), hepatitis B, poliomyelitis (polio), and Haemophilus influenzae type b, often called Hib. Hexaxim is part of routine childhood immunisation programmes in many countries and helps reduce the number of injections a child needs by combining multiple vaccines into one.
Hexaxim works by stimulating the child?s immune system to produce protective antibodies against each of the six diseases. It does not contain live bacteria or live viruses, so it cannot cause the diseases it protects against. Instead, it contains inactivated or purified components that safely train the immune system to recognise and fight these infections if the child is exposed to them in the future.
Hexaxim is given as an injection into a muscle, usually in the thigh for infants or the upper arm for older children. It is typically administered as part of a scheduled series of doses, often starting at around 6 weeks of age, followed by additional doses at specific intervals depending on national immunisation guidelines. It may also be used as a booster dose in certain situations.
After receiving Hexaxim, it is common for children to experience mild and temporary side effects. These may include redness, swelling, or tenderness at the injection site, mild fever, irritability, crying, drowsiness, reduced appetite, or mild diarrhoea. These reactions usually resolve within a few days and are a normal sign that the immune system is responding to the vaccine.
Less commonly, children may develop a higher fever or more pronounced discomfort. Very rarely, allergic reactions can occur. Signs of a serious allergic reaction include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, severe rash, or extreme drowsiness. If any of these occur, immediate medical attention is required.
Hexaxim should not be given to children who have had a severe allergic reaction to a previous dose of the vaccine or to any of its components. It should also be postponed in children who are acutely unwell with a high fever, although mild illnesses such as a cold are usually not a reason to delay vaccination.
Vaccination with Hexaxim plays a critical role in preventing serious and potentially life-threatening infections. Diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, polio, and Hib can cause severe complications including breathing difficulties, paralysis, brain damage, and death. By completing the recommended vaccination schedule, children gain strong and long-lasting protection.
Hexaxim does not protect against all types of meningitis or all causes of infection, so continued routine vaccinations and general health precautions remain important. Parents should keep an up-to-date vaccination record and attend scheduled follow-up appointments to ensure full protection.
Overall, Hexaxim is a safe, effective, and well-tolerated vaccine that provides essential protection during early childhood and plays a major role in preventing serious infectious diseases worldwide.
