Ramucirumab is a targeted cancer medicine used to treat certain advanced cancers, including stomach cancer, gastro-oesophageal junction cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, and liver cancer. Ramucirumab may be used on its own or in combination with chemotherapy, depending on the type of cancer and previous treatments. If you have been prescribed ramucirumab, it means your oncology team has selected a therapy that targets how cancer cells grow and develop blood supply.
Ramucirumab is a monoclonal antibody. Ramucirumab works by blocking a receptor called VEGFR-2, which is involved in the formation of new blood vessels. Cancer cells rely on new blood vessels to supply oxygen and nutrients so they can grow and spread. By blocking this pathway, ramucirumab reduces blood supply to the tumour, slowing cancer growth and progression. Ramucirumab does not work like traditional chemotherapy and does not directly kill cancer cells.
Ramucirumab is given by intravenous infusion into a vein. Ramucirumab is administered in a hospital or infusion clinic by trained healthcare professionals. You will not take ramucirumab at home. Ramucirumab is usually given every two weeks, although the schedule may vary depending on your treatment plan. Each infusion typically takes about 60 minutes, and you will be monitored closely during and after the infusion.
Before each ramucirumab infusion, you may be given medicines such as antihistamines to reduce the risk of infusion-related reactions.
Now let?s talk about what to expect while receiving ramucirumab.
One of the most important side effects of ramucirumab is high blood pressure. Ramucirumab can cause blood pressure to rise, even in people who have never had high blood pressure before. Your blood pressure will be checked regularly. Report headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, or nosebleeds, as these can be signs of elevated blood pressure.
Ramucirumab can increase the risk of bleeding. This may include nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or bruising. More serious bleeding, such as coughing up blood, blood in stools or urine, or black stools, must be reported immediately.
Ramucirumab can affect wound healing. Because it interferes with blood vessel growth, wounds may heal more slowly. Inform your healthcare team if you have had recent surgery, have a wound that is not healing, or are planning surgery or dental procedures.
Ramucirumab can increase the risk of blood clots, which can lead to serious conditions such as stroke or heart attack. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop chest pain, sudden shortness of breath, swelling or pain in one leg, weakness on one side of the body, or sudden vision or speech problems.
Protein in the urine can occur with ramucirumab, which reflects effects on kidney blood vessels. Urine tests are often done before treatment. Report swelling in the legs or face, foamy urine, or sudden weight gain.
Ramucirumab can cause gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal pain, nausea, or reduced appetite. Report persistent or severe symptoms so they can be managed early.
Fatigue is common with ramucirumab, especially when given with chemotherapy. Rest when needed and pace daily activities.
Infusion-related reactions can occur during or shortly after ramucirumab infusion. Symptoms may include fever, chills, flushing, rash, itching, shortness of breath, chest tightness, or dizziness. Nurses monitor you closely during the infusion. Always report any unusual sensations immediately.
Ramucirumab can cause low blood counts, particularly when used with chemotherapy. Blood tests are done regularly. Report signs of infection, unusual bruising, or bleeding.
Ramucirumab can increase the risk of gastrointestinal perforation, which is a rare but serious condition. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop severe abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, or a rigid abdomen.
Ramucirumab should not be used during pregnancy, as it can harm an unborn baby. Effective contraception is required during ramucirumab treatment and for the period advised after the last dose. Breastfeeding is not recommended during ramucirumab therapy.
Ramucirumab can interact with other medicines that affect bleeding or blood pressure. Always inform your pharmacist and healthcare team about all medicines you are taking, including over-the-counter medicines and supplements.
If you feel unwell at any time while receiving ramucirumab, do not wait until your next appointment. Early reporting of symptoms is essential for safe management.
As your pharmacist, my role is to help you understand why ramucirumab has been prescribed, what side effects to watch for, and when to seek urgent medical attention. I do not administer ramucirumab or adjust oncology treatment plans, but I support safe and informed use through education and counselling.
Ramucirumab is a targeted therapy designed to slow cancer growth by reducing its blood supply. Understanding how ramucirumab works and recognising side effects early helps you receive the greatest benefit from ramucirumab while minimising risks.
