Gefitinib is a targeted cancer medicine used mainly to treat a specific type of lung cancer called non-small cell lung cancer when the cancer has certain genetic changes in the EGFR gene. Gefitinib is only prescribed after testing confirms that the cancer is likely to respond to gefitinib. If you have been prescribed gefitinib, it means your oncology team has identified that gefitinib is appropriate for your cancer type.
Gefitinib works by blocking a protein called the epidermal growth factor receptor, often shortened to EGFR. In some cancers, EGFR sends constant signals telling cancer cells to grow and divide. Gefitinib blocks these signals. By doing this, gefitinib slows down or stops cancer cell growth and may shrink tumours or keep the cancer stable. Gefitinib does not work like traditional chemotherapy and does not affect all rapidly dividing cells in the same way.
Gefitinib is taken by mouth once daily. Gefitinib can be taken with or without food. Try to take gefitinib at the same time each day to maintain steady levels in your body. Swallow the tablet whole with water. If you have difficulty swallowing, some gefitinib tablets can be dispersed in water, but this should only be done if advised by your pharmacist or doctor.
Gefitinib is usually taken continuously for as long as it is working and side effects remain manageable. You may feel well while taking gefitinib, but it is important not to stop gefitinib unless your doctor tells you to do so.
Now let?s talk about what to expect while taking gefitinib.
Skin reactions are very common with gefitinib. You may develop a rash, acne-like spots, dry skin, itching, or sensitivity. This rash often appears on the face, scalp, chest, or upper back and usually starts within the first few weeks of gefitinib treatment. Although the rash can be uncomfortable, it is often a sign that gefitinib is working. Gentle skin care, moisturisers, sun protection, and early reporting of skin changes help manage this side effect.
Diarrhoea is another common side effect of gefitinib. This can range from mild to more troublesome. Staying well hydrated is important. If diarrhoea is persistent, severe, or associated with weakness or dizziness, contact your healthcare team promptly so treatment can be started early.
Gefitinib can cause nausea, reduced appetite, or mild stomach discomfort. These symptoms are usually manageable and may improve over time. Report ongoing difficulty eating or significant weight loss.
Fatigue is common with gefitinib. This may be mild or more noticeable and can be related to the medicine, the cancer itself, or other treatments. Pacing activities and allowing time for rest can help.
Gefitinib can affect liver function. Blood tests are done regularly to monitor this. Seek medical advice if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, persistent nausea, vomiting, or right-sided abdominal pain.
A rare but serious side effect of gefitinib is inflammation of the lungs, called interstitial lung disease. Seek urgent medical attention if you develop new or worsening shortness of breath, persistent cough, fever, or chest pain. These symptoms should never be ignored while taking gefitinib.
Gefitinib can cause changes to the eyes, such as dry eyes, irritation, or redness. Report eye pain, vision changes, or persistent eye discomfort.
Gefitinib may increase sensitivity to sunlight. Use sunscreen, protective clothing, and avoid prolonged sun exposure where possible.
Gefitinib can interact with other medicines, especially medicines that reduce stomach acid such as proton pump inhibitors and H2 blockers. These can reduce how well gefitinib is absorbed. Always check with your pharmacist before starting or stopping any medicine while taking gefitinib.
Gefitinib should not be used during pregnancy, as it can harm an unborn baby. Effective contraception is required during gefitinib treatment and for the period advised after stopping treatment. Breastfeeding is not recommended while taking gefitinib.
If you miss a dose of gefitinib, take it as soon as you remember unless it is within 12 hours of your next dose. Do not take two doses together.
As your pharmacist, my role is to help you understand how to take gefitinib correctly, recognise common and serious side effects, and know when to seek medical advice. I do not adjust gefitinib doses or manage oncology decisions, but I support safe and informed use through counselling.
Gefitinib is a well-established targeted therapy for EGFR-positive lung cancer. Understanding how gefitinib works and what to expect helps you take gefitinib confidently, safely, and consistently as part of your treatment plan.
